Steven Universe: The Gem Fusions

Why, Hello there. Welcome to my blog on the postulation of the Steven Universe Crystal Gems Fusions. Yes, I am a fan of the show. I feel that this is a show that is actually trying to make sense. Its not one of those crappy shows like Uncle Grandpa. Literally, the show has no purpose. In Steven Universe, there are fusions that result upon two Gems fusing their powers together to become one Gem for a short time. So far, only two have been introduced. Opal and Sugilite. I have several guesses at what the other Gem Fusions might be, even though several of them may not actually be introduced.

The First Gem Fusion is Opal, a fusion between Amethyst and Pearl. Opal was introduced in episode 12: "Giant Woman."

She possesses the stature of Pearl, being tall and thin. Her skin his a slight grayish color and her hair is long and white, like Amethyst's. She wears an outfit that resembles Pearl's slightly, with the upper torso resembling Pearl's skirt, but for lower body, completely unlike Amethyst's and Pearl's. As for her eyes, rather than Sugilite, who has 5 eyes in total, she retains having two, but with unique pupils that are drawn to represent Amethyst's placed inside of Pearl's if you look closely. For height, I'm going to assume she is about 15 feet/4.6 meters tall. I calculated this by comparing Steven to Greg, who I am assuming is an average height human being, and then comparing Steven to Opal.

And now onto her personality. Pearl, being nothing more than a perfectionist, always wanting things to go right and not stopping work until a task is as good as it should be, would be opposite to Amethyst, who is laid-back, headstrong, and overall not worried about the consequences of her actions. When these two personalities become one, they ultimately would cancel out, resulting in Opal, who is quiet and wise. Her voice is low and smooth.

The second Gem Fusion is Sugilite, a fusion between Garnet and Amethyst. Sugilite was introduced in Episode 20: "Coach Steven."

In the shortest terms possible, Sugilite could easily be described as "a rockstar inspired being." She is much larger than Opal, bringing the studio's size regularties into question. Sugilite appears to be roughly two and a half times the size of Opal, which is about 37.5 feet/11.43 meters tall. Her skin is a dark shade of purple, and she wears black and purple clothes with stars on the knees. Unlike Opal, she is on the bulkier side with a very wide body with huge muscles. She has five eyes in total, the first four masked by a pair of cool shades that slightly resemble Garnet's, and the fifth perfectly visible in the center of her forehead. Her hair is long and black and she has purple nails that themselves look like gems. Her gems are a deep purple. Her weapon fusion between Amethyst's whip and Garnet's gauntlets is a wrecking ball-like weapon. She also has sharp fangs, which is unusual, considering neither Garnet nor Amethyst has anything like this.

As for personality, if you were to combine headstrong and laid back with powerful and wise, you get something that's power-hungry and over-bearing. In Pearl's song "Strong in the Real Way", she states that Sugilite is out of control and over-zealous. She is very self-satisfied and doesn't seem to care what others think. When she is told by Pearl that they need to seperate, Sugilite responds with immediate force, sparking a fight in which Pearl ultimately lost. However, in this fight, Pearl does manage to knock Sugilite's glasses off, displaying her slightly unnerving five-eyed glare. If not for Steven's inspirational speech for Pearl, I doubt Sugilite would have let up, even after Pearl was completely unable to retaliate in any way.

I am not going to elaborate on my guess on the fusion between Garnet and Pearl because I am probably going to be proven wrong. After all, they are going to introduce her eventually.

I am going to guess that her name is Cat's Eye Scapolite or simply Scapolite. Because Pearl's gem is on her forehead, and Garnet's third eye is on her forehead as well, the result would be very cool, with a gem becoming a third eye. Because Garnet's skin is brown, and Pearl's is a pale white, this would create a light tan for her skin tone. Her size is hard to take a guess at considering Sugilite's and Opal's size difference. Perhaps the creators of Steven Universe are going by the size system that is calculated by adding the two or more heights of the gems that are fusing together, but I'm not quite sure. Her weapon fusion would most likely be a hammer-like weapon whose staff would belong to Pearl's spearstaff and the head being one of Garnet's gauntlets.

Next is Alexandrite, the Fusion between Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl who was introduced in Episode 32: "Fusion Cuisine"

Alexandrite appears to be 32.5 feet/12.95  tall, which is five feet taller than Sugilite. She is a very colorful being with long, sea-green hair. Her skin is a magenta red color and she wears sunglasses just as Garnet does. Her color scheme is unique because is symbolizes the actual colors of a real Alexandrite gem when it is exposed to two different kinds of light. She has six arms rather than four and she has an interesting star pattern on her knees. Her most interesting feature is her second jaw underneath her head. This is shown twice, the first time when the Fusion starts to come apart and the second time when she is chasing down Steven in the bus. This jaw is lined with sharp teeth and is one of her coolest features.

As far as personality goes, she is much more like Garnet than any of them. She has her rage factor, and she is calm and collected otherwise. It is unknown what her weapon fusion is.

My next few Gem Fusion guesses are regarding the fusions between Rose Quartz and the four other Gems, Pearl, Amethyst, Garnet, and Lapis Lazuli. By Rose Quartz, I do not mean Steven. I personally believe that a fusion between Steven and the others would be...weird. The personalities of these four fusions will remain unknown, as we do not know for sure what Rose Quartz's personality was besides the vague hint that she "saw beauty in everything."

My next guess is the Gem Fusion between Rose Quartz and Garnet.

I would call this fusion Rhodolite. She would be a heavily muscled being if you combined Rose's short and squat stature with Garnet's tall and slightly bulky. Her hair would be very large with thick curls. It's color would be a deep red. Her gems would be a deep reddish pink. I'm not exactly sure what her weapon would be, considering a pair of Gauntlets can't combine too well with a Shield. Unless of course Rose had a weapon that goes with the shield, but we remain in the dark about that at the moment.

The next Gem Fusion guess is between Rose Quartz and Pearl.

I would call this fusion Morganite. Her stature would not be Pearl's nor Rose's, it would be something in between. Her arms and legs would be thin but short as a result. Her hair would barely reach her shoulder's and it would be perfectly straight rather than curled like Rose's. The color would be a very light pink with hints of gold mixed in. Her gem would be a very light pink with stripes of milky white washed through them.

The Gem Fusion between Rose Quartz and Amethyst.

I would call this fusion Spinel. Her stature would be shorter than any other fusion and she would be slightly chubby. Her hair would reach her ankles and it would be a purplish pink with a few small curls. Her gems would be a deep violet hue.

The Gem Fusion between Rose Quartz and Lapis Lazuli.

I would call this fusion Flourite. Her stature would be almost a mirror to Pearl's build. Her hair would reach the middle of her back and it would be a light purple color and it would curl upwards elegantly. Her gem would be a deep deep violet color and they would both be in the teardrop shape that Lapis has. She would retain Lapis' water wings, except the color would be a slight purplish color mixed in with the blue.

Okay, moving on to my posulations of the fusions between the three Crystal Gems and Lapis Lazuli. Lapis was the gem introduced in Episode 25: "Mirror Gem." She is the Gem that was trapped in the mirror supposedly by the Crystal Gems. She was misunderstood, and only wanted to go home. She seems to look out for her friends, demonstrated at the end of "Mirror Gem." They're not gonna let us leave. Steven, come with me. And when Steven denied this offer, her expression changed and just before she dashed off under the cover of the sea, she said in a grim tone, don't trust them, Steven.

My first guess is what I have called Iolite. Iolite is what I think the Gem Fusion would be if Amethyst and Lapis Lazuli were to fuse. This is one of my favorite Fusion headcanon mainly because of the color scheme I have imagined for her. Her skin would be a cool indigo color and her hair would be a deep violet, reaching down to her ankles. She would wear a purple dress that becomes blue from her abdomin area up to her chest, where it becomes a tanktop-like garment that droops just enough for you to see her chest gem, which would be an indigo-purple color. As for her weapon, at no point during Episodes 25 and 26, "Mirror Gem" and "Ocean Gem" did Lapis feel the need to summon her Gem weapon, leaving us in the dark on what it is. For the purpose of this headcanon, I'm going to assume her Gem weapon is a trident. If this imaginary trident were to combine with Amethyst's whip, it would form a sort of grappling hook weapon.

For personality, I'd say she'd be slightly arrogant and a pinch uncouth alongside that. Lapis' defiance to complying with Pearl's request to show her and Steven the galaxy warp was critical to discovering her personality. After Steven becomes friends with her while she was in the mirror is heartwarming, and proves Lapis has a pure heart after all. If this was combined with Amethyst's general laid-back and headstrong self, the resulting personality wouldn't be shy nor headstrong, but a sort of mixture, creating pride.

My next Gem Fusion is called Hemimorphite (long name, I know). Hemimorphite is what I think the Gem Fusion between Pearl and Lapis Lazuli would be. Because Pearl and Lapis look so similar, the resulting Fusion might not seem as unique as the others, but this one is still one of my favorites. She
would be tall and incredibly thin, with a light blue skin tone with short hair that has a sky blue color. Her eyes would be a sky blue color as well. Her outfit would be a light blue dress that is shorter than Lapis' but longer than Pearl's skirt. Because Pearl wears a ribbon around her waist, and Lapis wears a ribbon on her back, I would image these two ribbons both meeting on her back and being tied into a big bow on her back. She would keep Lapis' water wings, except in this fusion, I'd imagine them splitting so that there are four wings in total, rendering her flightless, but cool-looking. Her gems would be a wispy blue color. Her weapon would be a long spear-trident weapon.

For personality, I'd see her as incredibly graceful and practically mute. She would only talk if it was perfectly necessary (like Opal), and her gracefulness would be well-noticable. However, Pearl and Lapis both have an angry side of their personalities. Pearl with her scolding, and Lapis, when she called out the Crystal Gems on keeping her trapped in the mirror. With Hemimorphite, if you were to
get her mad enough...

My next Gem Fusion is called Chalcedony. Chalcedony is what I think the Gem Fusion between Garnet and Lapis Lazuli would be. She would be large, with a tall and muscled build. Her hair would be large like Garnet's, but flowing like Lapis'. The color of her hair would be a very dark blue. She would not have a third eye. Her outfit would be a short dress that is colored half black and half blue. Her hands would be black and travel halfway up her arm. She would not retain Lapis' water wings. Her gems would be a slight purplish color. Her weapon would be blue gauntlets with the trident prongs attached like claws.

For personality, she would be completely mute. She would not be able to talk at all. Of course, she would be very very wise, just unable to provide information verbally. On top of all that, she has her short fuse. For those who have seen Episode 25, where Steven accidentally backhands Garnet, her reaction is frightening. I always thought Garnet was unnerving without her glasses on, but with an angry glare...yikes. A death stare from Chalcedony would be quite the experience.

That's all I have. Unless the creators of Steven Universe intend to add a another Gem, I will most likely have another set of Gem Fusion headcanons. Thanks for reading.

  1. Does Sugilite have fangs as a result of Amethyst's extensive eating habits?
